Course Description:

Geodesy, a branch of earth sciences, is the science that deals with the measurement and representation of the Earth, relying on datums and coordinate systems to design global and national control networks. This course presents the foundation upon which surveying, and more notably, GPS surveying are dependent upon in modern times. With the need for more accuracy and precision on a national and global scale, the basis of Ellipsoids, Geoids and various Datums involved in surveying are discussed in detail here.

Outline:

  • Introduction and History of Geodesy
  • Figure of the Earth
  • Geodetic Surveying Techniques
  • Geodetic Systems
  • Physical Geodesy
  • Satellite Geodesy
  • Other Developments in Geodesy
  • The World Geodetic System
